Band B1, July 2008 to 2020 table: €270 a year, €298 paid half-yearly, €304 paid quarterly.Your amounts will appear here once you have chosen a table and entered a figure.

Example: July 2008 to 2020 table, 128 g/km.

Once: one disc for 12 months

One disc of €270.

€270 in total the baseline

Twice: two discs of 6 months

Two discs of €149 each; the hatched disc shows the extra €28.

€298 in total €28 more than paying once

Four times: four discs of 3 months

Four discs of €76 each; the hatched disc shows the extra €34.

€304 in total €34 more than paying once

The area of each disc shows its price, on the same scale for every car (the largest possible disc is the top rate, €2,400). Six months cost 55.5% of the annual rate and three months 28.25%, rounded down to the nearest euro. The hatched disc is the extra you pay compared with a single annual payment, if the rate does not change during the year.

Also worth knowing

Paying late? Each month of arrears costs one tenth of the annual rate: €27.00 a month for this car. The total is rounded down to the nearest euro only after multiplying by the number of months.

Scrapped, stolen or exported? You may be able to get a refund if at least 3 whole calendar months are left on the disc. There is generally no refund when a car is sold.

Lost the disc? A replacement tax disc costs €6. It can be free if the disc was lost in the post.

Which table? Engine size for cars first registered before 1 July 2008; CO2 (NEDC) from 1 July 2008 to 31 December 2020; CO2 (WLTP) from 1 January 2021. A new car registered from 1 January 2008 to 30 June 2008 is on the CO2 table if its motor tax is based on CO2 emissions, and on the engine size table otherwise.

How the plate is read. Since 2013, the year on an Irish registration plate has three digits: the last two digits of the year the car was first brought into use, then 1 for January to June or 2 for July to December (171 or 172 for 2017). Before 2013 it had only two digits (08 for 2008), so an 08 plate does not show in which half of 2008 the car was first brought into use. For an 08 plate, the calculator asks how the car is taxed.

Imported used car? The table depends on when the car was first registered in its country of origin, not on when it arrived in Ireland. For a car first registered abroad on or after 1 July 2008, it also depends on whether an NEDC or a WLTP CO2 figure was given to Revenue when the car was registered here. Check that the table chosen from the plate is the right one.
